Miyamaso Takamiya

This traditional ryokan is as authentic as it is beautiful. First opened to guests in 1716, the facilities have been continually updated to maintain modernity and quality but the essential architecture, the details and the spirit of the guest house have remained the same. The result is possibly the most traditional Japanese experience you could get - even the western style rooms are beautifully decorated and breathe warmth. To top that off, the hotel is located only 50 metres from the Zao Ropeway.

Despite its age, the hotel has kept up to date with trends and the demands of guests well. Each room features heating and cooling as well as satellite television, a refrigerator, a kettle and a bathroom. The larger and more luxurious rooms also feature lounge and dining areas and, if you're feeling opulent, open-air, private onsens. Depending on the location of the room, some are also subject to beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. Please note children 11 years and under are not permitted to stay in this accommodation.

Arguably the second best feature of Takamiya, after its authenticity, are its beautiful onsens. There are nine public onsens for guests to use which, of course, are all as beautifully decorated and traditionally designed as the rest of the hotel. There is also a private onsen room and an in-house massage room to complement this which can both be booked in advance.

The hotel features traditional Japanese dishes for breakfast and dinner, expect to have your taste buds excited by new flavours, ingredients and styles of cooking if you've never been to Japan before.

Rounding it all off are the incredibly helpful staff of the hotel. While they might not speak the best English, all efforts are made to ensure your stay is wonderful - they are totally committed to provide the traditional ryokan experience all of these years later. Whether you're enjoying an afternoon in the hot springs or spending your day reading a book in the lobby lounge, you won't be able to do it in a more gorgeous and authentic Japanese destination than this.
