SKI & SUN: COMBINING THE BEST OF TWO WORLDS
If you’re thinking of heading to Big White this season, but hesitating at the thought of leaving summer behind – we have the ultimate trip ideas for you.
Your starting point is at Big White Ski Resort in British Columbia, Canada. With incredible, light, dry powder, 118 runs served by 15 lifts, terrain that’s well-suited to every level and a huge range of activities also available off-snow, it’s the ultimate spot to spend a week or two on the slopes.
Big White is also positioned in the ideal spot to take advantage of the rest of the Northern Hemisphere. Serviced by Kelowna International Airport, a 45-minute flight from Vancouver International Airport, it’s easy to get to, and even easier to combine your snow trip with some sunshine.
Big White is known as Canada’s favourite family resort, and it’s easy to see why – it’s all about convenience here. As Canada’s largest totally ski-in/ski-out resort village, it doesn’t get much easier to find accommodation that’s well-placed and central.
If you haven't been to Big White before, check out the video below which gives a great overview of all the things we love about Big White.
Kids ski free at Big White when booking with Skimax, so it’s the perfect spot to bring the family along to enjoy the fresh snow and the fun times on offer. Kids will love night skiing, which runs every Tuesday to Saturday nights, along with the tube park, dog-sledding, kids snowmobiles, ice skating and ice climbing tower. Adults will love the award-winning Ski School – you can even arrange for a Kids Centre instructor to come and pick up your kids directly from your accommodation in the morning.
Big White also runs free family-friendly activities, such as a regular Carnival Night, Bingo night, Family Games night and weekly fireworks in their fun-filled Happy Valley area; alongside regular programs at the ski school such as Movie & Pizza nights and rock-climbing nights.
We recommend staying in Trappers Crossing for the ultimate family experience. With a hot tub and a full kitchen, plus easy access to the slopes, they’re well-appointed and have a real Canadian condo feel.
As for the sunshine element… the kids are going to love any mention of Disneyland that comes their way. With a trip to Canada in the works, it’s easy to incorporate a stopover in Los Angeles for a few days at Disneyland Resort in California, alongside Universal Studios. There’s no time difference between Los Angeles and Big White, so it’s a great way to have a Disney adventure while also keeping it hassle-free.
Want to explore even more of the United States? It’s also cost-effective to fly from Kelowna to Orlando, with Canadian budget airline Westjet running regular services to sunny Florida. Once you’re done with exploring the four Disney parks there (including Animal Kingdom and Epcot), you can fly to Dallas and board a direct Qantas flight to Sydney to arrive home in Australia.
Couples love Big White. The winter wonderland transforms into a romantic holiday destination for those looking for a beautiful place to ski and snowboard. With a landscape that’s covered in world-famous snow ghosts – trees covered in ice rime and bent into spectacular shapes at the top of the mountain – and incredible views over the Monashee mountains, you’ll love riding the chairlifts with your better half and taking it all in.
When it comes to activities, book in for a couples massage at one of the on-mountain day spas; join a trip to Kelowna to watch a seriously exciting game of ice hockey, complete with cups of beer and hot dogs; mush through the backcountry on a highly recommended dog sled tour; or, better yet, cozy up under a pile of blankets on a horse sleigh tour that takes you to an isolated cabin in the woods for dinner and drinks.
If you and your significant other are 50+ then the Big White Master's Week could be perfect for you. Designed specifically for passionate skiers aged 50+, this week-long program combines the best skiing Big White has to offer with a series of exclusive après events including wine tastings, appies at our best local restaurants, evening sleigh rides through our magical, lantern-lit winter wonderland, and more. It's a great way to meet like minded ski enthusiasts and bookable through Skimax. Watch the video below to see what previous participants have to say about Master's Week.
Once you’ve finished up with your romantic holiday, Vegas is calling. You can fly direct to Las Vegas from Kelowna International Airport, making it super straightforward to drop by Sin City for a few rounds of roulette, relaxing by the pool and maybe catching a show or two.
If the bright city lights aren’t really your thing, Hawaii is sure to be. Fly from Kelowna to Vancouver and then direct to Honolulu for the beach paradise holiday of your dreams. Relax and enjoy the sun, surf and the cocktails at your romantic resort of choice and then fly home directly to Australia; the location makes the plane ride that much easier, and you’ll have the sweet, sweet memories of your sun-and-snow-combined holiday to get you through the post-holiday blues.
